Basic Linux Stream 9
Basic Linux Stream 9 is an open-source, community-driven Linux distribution that serves as a rolling-release development platform for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It aims to offer a more continuous flow of updates and features compared to the traditional CentOS Linux releases, which were more static and geared towards long-term stability.
System environment and build tools have been updated. GCC 11 is used to build packages. The standard C library has been updated to glibc 2.34. The Linux kernel package is based on release 5.14. The RPM package manager has been updated to version 4.16 with support for integrity control via fapolicyd.
The desktop is based on GNOME 40 (RHEL 8 shipped with GNOME 3.28) and the GTK 4 library. In GNOME 40, the virtual desktops in Activities Overview mode are switched to a horizontal orientation and displayed as a continuously scrolling chain from left to right.
Highlights:
- Minimal CentOS Stream 9 userspace installation
- Current Linux 5.14 kernel for bleeding edge capabilities
- Bash shell and coreutils for basic Linux admin
- Yum package manager to add components
