Migration Carbon Emission Savings Calculator: 2-Week Implementation
An accelerated technical discovery for estimating the sustainability impact of migrations to Azure.
Version 1 has developed a unique Migration Carbon Emission Savings Calculator. This is a tool to plan, forecast and implement migration to cloud, in the most carbon and cost-efficient means possible. The tool can compare the ‘As Is’ On-Premise scenario, to various ‘To Be’ scenarios, providing the best choices for businesses and the environment, all done easily before a single workload is migrated. A tool that is science, fact, and data-driven, based on the best academic and trusted public sources, businesses can use to confidently plan for their carbon neutrality goals.
Having reviewed similar tools on the market, we identified opportunities for enhancement. For instance, some carbon calculators require installation on an actual tenancy to monitor the carbon footprint of the currently installed resources, but this cannot be obviously employed for future or hypothetical scenarios. Other carbon calculators utilise basic methods of mapping (e.g. T-shirt sizing) the on-prem infrastructure to its cloud counterparts whilst utilising general estimates for on-prem Power Usage effectiveness (PUE) and Carbon Intensity. Consequently, these calculations are very general, and may not always be accurate.
Version 1’s Migration Carbon Emission Savings Calculator overcomes these limitations. Our web APIs calculate the emissions for the on-prem infrastructure to be migrated to Azure, alongside the corresponding soon ‘to be’ cloud infrastructure estate.
These results are illustrated using a Power BI dashboard that projects carbon savings for the next 5 years.
Version 1's Carbon Emission Savings Calculator provides the following benefits:
Days 1-2: Setting up resources
Days 3-8: Estimations - Once resources are set up, carbon emission savings for a multitude of migration configurations (up to a maximum of 20) can be estimated. Each migration configuration will require a combination of on-prem and cloud resources (provided by the customer).
Day 9-10: Final presentation and reporting
