Over the years, the legacy BI system would have large numbers of reports developed and maintained by various users. Understanding the reports inventory, duplications and dependencies is a big challenge. Migration owners need to finalize the approach for migration, estimate the efforts for migration, and create a phase-wise migration plan.

Persistent’s approach to reports migration comprises of 3 phases.

1. Preparation, where we create reports inventory and rationalize the reports. We use our BI migration accelerator which crawls the legacy BI tool and creates metadata repository. Our Reports Unifier accelerators finds similar reports and helps rationalization and consolidation.
2. Second phase is automation driven Execution phase where we leverage metadata repository to create reports in the destination BI systems and validate them. Utilities like Design and Test Gen help manual migrations of reports which could not be migrated automatically.
3. Postproduction support and enablement phase comes into picture once migration is complete.

Persistent report migration accelerator for Tableau to Microsoft Power BI takes tableau dashboards or workbooks in the Tableau Packaged Workbook format as input, parse them to extract the complete metadata and creates an interim database that serves as an input to the next step. This interim database is generic and tool agnostic. The metadata database captures complete metadata that includes sources, calculated fields, charts, and even colors. Apart from metadata, a Microsoft Power BI Guidance Documents is generated for each chart in exiting tableau report which enables Microsoft Power BI developers and testers to manually migrate the report.
