The VPN Server is based on Libreswan VPN software. This is a software implementation of the most widely supported and standardized VPN protocol, using "IPsec" and the Internet Key Exchange ("IKE"). These standards are produced and maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force ("IETF").

A VPN connection is made simply by exchanging very simple public keys – exactly like exchanging SSH keys – and all the rest is transparently handled by the VPN Server. There is no need to manage connections, be concerned about the state, manage daemons, or worry about what's under the hood. IPsec/L2TP VPN Server presents an extremely basic yet powerful interface.

A combination of extremely high-speed cryptographic primitives and means that secure networking can be very high-speed. It is suitable for both small embedded devices like smartphones and fully loaded backbone routers.
