The Assessment is an evaluation of your current Azure disaster recovery capabilities to help identify the steps that need to be taken to ensure that critical applications, data, and Azure infrastructure are protected and can be recovered quickly and efficiently in the event of a disaster.

The outcome may include a range of areas:

• DR Plan: steps that need to be taken to ensure that critical systems and data can be recovered quickly and efficiently in the event of a disaster. This may include recommendations such as enabling auto-scaling, deploying backup and recovery solutions, and developing disaster recovery testing and simulation processes.
• Business Continuity: a list of critical applications, systems, and data that were identified with DR gaps or vulnerabilities, including options to enhance protection to meet acceptable downtime and recovery objectives for each component.
• Implementation and Monitoring: recommendations on monitoring the environment to ensure that it is functioning optimally and that the critical systems and data are protected
• Architecture Improvements: recommendations on how architectural changes, deployment changes or alternative cloud services can improve the resiliency against transient, hardware, and regional outages. This may include recommendations such as active-active deployments, cloud-native geo-redundant services, services with built-in high availability, and design patterns such as eventual consistency through asynchronous messaging.

After the assessment, a follow-up Statement of Work can be requested and scheduled, such as:

• DR Handbook: document the processes and procedures to follow in the event of a disaster to ensure business continuity and minimise the impact on operations.
• DR Test Run: schedule a DR test run to ensure that the DR plan is still effective and that the recovery procedures work as expected.
• Azure Architecture: If RPO and RTO improvements are required, design, build, and deploy resilient architectures, such as high availability spanning across data centres to protect against data centre failures.
• Backups & Policies: as required, enable backups, data replication and create policies for data retention, backup audits, enforcement and backup frequencies. Establish adequate recovery procedures to restore data if necessary.
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC): produce IaC deployments and pipelines to allow for quick and automated recovery of infrastructure, configurations and settings.
• Monitoring & Alerting: configure health check probes on apps and infrastructure, add monitoring and alerting to provide real-time visibility into potential issues such as intrusion detection, DDoS attacks, failing backups, over-utilised resources and network issues to proactively take measures to mitigate and minimise the impact of a disaster.
