Mirantis Container Runtime (MCR) is designed for enterprise development and IT teams to build, ship, and run business-critical applications in production and at scale. MCR enables native Docker containers on Windows Server, and is certified and supported on WIndows 2019 and Windows 2022 to provide enterprises with the most secure container platform in the industry. MCR can be downloaded and configured on Windows Server using Mirantis Powershell install script or users on Azure platform can use Windows with MCR VM image which is pre-configured with MCR to quickly provision Azure VMs and run containerized applications.

MCR is the only container runtime validated for FIPS 140-2, supports Kubernetes and Swarm orchestration, and provides other features such as:
  1. CRI compliant container runtime
  2. 24x7 support
  3. Enforced Signed images
  4. New Storage interface

The Windows Server 2019 Datacenter with Containers image was designed to enable Developers and IT Pros to create cloud native and modernize their traditional apps using containers and micro-services. Mirantis Container Runtime is a truly tested and used by Fortune 2000 companies since 2016 to run their mission critical applications.

This new VM image is offered by Mirantis, under Mirantis license, and continue to run your containerized application, it's the same container runtime binary previously licensed by Microsoft. This is a seamless transition for customers using Microsoft provided VM image prior to September 23, 2022 to run their production and non-production application from Azure Gallery.

Note: If your current Azure ARM template extension scripts is point to Microsoft provided image SKU, make sure to update the SKU to this new VM image from Mirantis.
Current image is based on Windows Server 2019 Datacenter (September build) + MCR 20.10.13
