Apache Tomcat is a free and open-source implementation of the Jakarta Servlet, Jakarta Expression Language, and WebSocket technologies. It provides a "pure Java" HTTP web server environment in which Java code can also run that's why we can call it a Java web application server.

Apache Tomcat (or simply Tomcat) is a web server that also is a Java servlet container. Tomcat can be used as a standalone application or with other web server applications.

The Apache Tomcat web server is successfully installed and runs as a Windows Service automatically when the system boots. To Check if Apache Tomcat service is running. Follow the steps below to ensure that Tomcat is started as a Windows service.

Open the Start menu and search for Services.

Select the Services result.

In the Services window, locate the Apache Tomcat service. The Status column indicates whether the service is running or not. Start or stop the service using the buttons in the toolbar or by pressing Stop or Restart on the left side of the service list.

At this point, Apache Tomcat is installed, configured and listens on port 8080 on localhost. It’s time to access Tomcat web interface through the web browser. Open your web browser and type the URL http://localhost:8080. You should see the Tomcat default page on the screen
